READ A CONCEPT BEFORE YOU BUILD IT
Describe a product, a service or a design — or, where attachments are enabled, attach an image of it — and ask the place what it would pick. The reading shows which concept is ahead, and among whom.
What you get
Several concepts, one question
Put up to 12 concepts in one question and read the order they come back in.
Show, don’t only tell
Where attachments are enabled, attach a picture of the concept in the map workspace. Twins read a neutral written description of it along with the question; they don’t see the picture.
Find who it is for
Cut by household, age, work or neighbourhood to see where a concept separates from the rest.
Residents or businesses
Ask the people who live somewhere, or the businesses that operate there.
Studies you could run
Residents
Which of these three packaging designs would you pick up first?
A reading shows: Which design is ahead with families compared with retirees, and whether the order holds across the city.
Residents
A neighbourhood café, a grocery or a gym for the empty storefront?
A reading shows: The order of the three, and which one is ahead near the storefront compared with the city as a whole.
Businesses
Which of these add-ons would your business try first?
A reading shows: Whether small employers and larger ones rank the add-ons the same way.
Questions
- Who answers?
- Simulated twins of the place’s population. Each twin is modeled on the real make-up of the place — age, household, work, housing — and weighted back to it.
- What kinds of questions can I ask?
- Yes/no, a choice among up to 12 options, or a belief question (what is true, rather than what you would do).
- Does it tell me how many people will buy?
- No. It shows the order concepts come back in and the gaps between them. It is not a sales forecast.
- Can I talk to a twin about why?
- Yes. From a reading you can interview twins from the group you read and read each answer in its own words, alongside who the twin is modeled on.
